Multilingualism and multiculturalism in Graeco-Roman Egypt

"The project, sponsored by a Kovalevskaja Award of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung (1 Million Euro), examines the evolution of language and script preferences in Graeco-Roman Egypt and their relation to cultural and ethnic factors. In a first stage (2005), a database of papyrological material in Egyptian languages and scripts is developed, building upon several unpublished digital projects. In a second stage (from mid 2005 onwards) a sociolinguistic analysis on the basis of this database and its Greek papyrological counterparts will be implemented."
