Solon and the 'Horoi': Facts on the Ground in Archaic Athens

"The horoi disestablished by Solon were neither inscribed mortgage records nor a mere metaphor, but markers of distinction established by the Athenian elite. Neither their physical form nor their precise function can now be determined, but they were intended to naturalize certain social facts by their physical presence. By disestablishing the horoi through legal fiat, Solon also disestablished the social facts they asserted."
